CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Coast Guard officials aided law enforcement following a police chase Friday morning that began in West Ashley and ended in the Folly River.

Around 2:30 a.m., deputies tried to stop a man in a vehicle on Highway 61 near Savage Road, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Office spokesman Roger Antonio.

Deputies then pursued the man onto James Island and he struck a curb near the Folly River boat ramp. The suspect then jumped into the water off the Folly River Bridge and swam against the current, Antonio said. Deputies lost sight of the man and eventually canceled the search because of indications the man had gotten out of the water and left, according to Antonio.

Some tracks were located not too far from where the man jumped off the bridge, according to Folly Beach police spokesman Andrew Gilreath.

Contact has been made with the registered owner of the vehicle and authorities are investigating.
