CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A groundbreaking was held on Friday for the brand new Stono Elementary School.
The school will be a two-story facility with 75,000 square feet which is enough room for 500 students.
"We're like kids at Christmas with the anticipation," said Katherine Engelbrecht, who has been teaching at Stono for about 15 years."We're looking forward to having the facilities that other schools have had and that we deserve."
"I'm excited to be a part of a new building," said Latrice Smalls, the interim principal."Ready to be part of what was needed for so long."
"It took a lot of elbow pushing, a lot of compromising, a lot of just speaking it into reality," said Charleston County School Board member Michael Miller."But I'm glad we're here."
The new school will cost about $25 million and is set to open in August of next year.
