MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County School District made some history Thursday morning.

The district broke ground on Lucy Beckham High School. It's set to be the district's first new high school, in a new facility, in 20 years.

Located at 1560 Mathis Ferry Road in Mt. Pleasant, CCSD officials and Mount Pleasant mayor Will Haynie were on-hand for the event on the site of the former Wando campus.

Lucy Beckham High School is scheduled to be ready for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The facility will be 245,00 square-feet and serve 1,500 students.

The school's mascot was also unveiled during the ceremony. The school will be known as the Lucy Beckham Bengals.
