NCPD Chief Reggie Burgess honors Liberty Hill students for academic success

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston Police Chief Reggie Burgess grew up in Liberty Hill and spent a lot of time at the Felix Pinckney Community Center admiring the portraits of important people on the wall.

Now his portrait is among them.

The Liberty Hill Improvement Council Afterschool Literacy Program recently rewarded participants of the program.

It started out with a handful of children and now more than 100 elementary students are involved.

Burgess says programs like this are vital to the community.

Students who read the most books had their names placed on a plaque to be hung on the Chief Reggie Burgess Wall of Achievement.

In addition to awards, and achievement medals each of the children received a pair of tennis shoes courtesy a donation from the USC Womens Basketball team.
