CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The 42nd annual Spoleto Festival USA started on Friday.
The well-known performing arts festival started in front of Charleston City Hall with confetti cannons and confetti.
The international festival features more than 150 performances.
Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg was in attendance for the opening ceremony at 80 Broad Street.
The festival tries to maintain a dedication to younger artists and was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti.
It runs through June 10 and features performances in opera; theater; dance; and chamber, symphonic, choral, and jazz music.
