CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Starbucks across the country are closing on Tuesday afternoon for what the company is calling racial bias training.
Only the company-owned stores will close at 2 p.m., such as freestanding buildings or those in a strip mall. Starbucks inside other stores such as Target or Harris Teeter will remain open and operate as normal.
The move comes several weeks after two black men, Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson, were arrested inside a Philadelphia Starbucks. The company has already changed its policy allowing anyone to sit inside a Starbucks and not buy anything.
Tuesday's four-hour session will give workers a primer on the history of civil rights. Workers will also view a short documentary film.
All stores will reopen on Wednesday. The two Philadelphia men reached a settlement with Starbucks for a total of $1 each and a promise from the company to create a $200,000 fund that will assist young entrepreneurs in the city.
