CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The deaths of two South Carolina broadcasters are tragic and heartbreaking.

WYFF Anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were covering severe weather in Polk County, North Carolina, when a tree fell and crushed their news vehicle.

I knew them both.

Mike and Aaron were veteran journalists in the Upstate. I worked with Aaron at WSPA. He was one of the most kind-hearted people I’ve ever met.

Covering news can be dangerous, especially during severe weather.  From the Lowcountry and from the team at Live 5; our hearts go out to Mike and Aaron’s families and to their co-workers at WYFF.
