SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A man has been charged following a beating outside a Summerville home in April which left an elderly man dead.
Neville Morgan, 78, died from blunt-force trauma at an area hospital April 14, one day after his body was found by family members outside his home.
Jerome Thomas is facing one charge of accessory to murder, according to Berkeley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mike Cochran. Thomas was arrested June 6 after investigators discovered Thomas was in possession of Morgan's missing credit and banking cards on the same day of the beating, and had ordered a friend to throw them away, Cochran said. BCSO later found the cards at a Moncks Corner construction site.
At the time of Morgan's death, Thomas was his tenant, according to Cochran. Thomas is being held at the Hill Finklea Detention Center on a $50,000 surety bond.
When deputies arrived that day they found Morgan had been "severely physically" assaulted.
A family member said when she arrived home, she found Morgan in the bed, and he had several bumps on his head and he was bleeding. Cochran said deputies are still looking for a murder suspect.
The sheriff's office said the victim had been transported to the Intensive Care Unit following the incident and was in "extremely critical condition" before he passed away.
