CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The city of Charleston is partnering with the Youth Volunteer Corps for their annual Summer Service-Learning Institute.
The institute is open to rising 7th and 8th graders as well as current 6th and 7th graders. The first session which starts Monday is called Intergenerational Week.
The other options include environmental week June 18-21, Nutrition Week July 9-12, and July 16-19 for Wild Card Week. The institute runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
"Each year, the SSLI grants youth volunteers a better sense of community and good citizenship while they gain hands-on experience in communication, leadership and teamwork," YVC of Charleston Program Director Jennifer Gorham said. " To date, over 50 youth have attended the SSLI, giving over 670 volunteer hours at 36 unique projects, and we look forward to building on that success in the coming months."'
Participating children are responsible for their own lunch and transportation, but scholarships are available for those who apply. An application is available here.
