LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Something special is happening at an Upstate nursing home.

A cactus that was planted outside the Laurens Memorial Home for the Aged more than two decades ago is almost ready to bloom.

Michelle Kelley, a volunteer at the nursing home said the cactus was planted by the director 25 years ago.

This year, a large stem sprang forth from the plant and staff and residents are eagerly waiting to watch it bloom.

Kelley said the blossoms will only open once, and then the blooms and stem will die.

The care home is located on Torrington Road in Laurens.
