COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Crews have rescued a man who was trapped in a truck after he crashed into a downed tree in Walterboro.

According to Colleton County Fire and Rescue, it happened on South Jefferies Boulevard near Hendersonville Highway.

Chief Barry McRoy said the incident started when Walterboro police were blocking off the road so SCDOT and SCE&G crews could clear a tree and remove knocked power lines.

The tree was blocking all four lanes of the South Jefferies Boulevard and had knocked out power to residents in Walterboro.

McRoy said the driver of the pickup truck drove around the crews and slammed into the tree at a high rate of speed.

It took about an hour for crews to rescue the man from the truck. Rescue crews took the man to MUSC where he was listed in serious condition.

Emergency officials had originally reported that a tree had fallen on the truck.
