CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police have arrested a man for a strong armed robbery in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston Police Department charged 20-year-old Tanikeol D'Arte Hawkins with strong armed robbery. He was also charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun for a weapon he had in his possession when he was arrested on Friday, according to police.

His arrest stems from an incident on Thursday that happened behind the Wells Fargo Bank at 177 Meeting St.

Police say around 11:25 a.m., a man followed the victim out the rear entrance of the bank, pushed the victim to the ground and took a small bag from him containing money.

"The suspect then ran south on Meeting Street," CPD officials said.

Hawkins is being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.

The investigation is continuing.
