WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police detectives are investigating after two women were assaulted within minutes of each other on the West Ashley Greenway on Wednesday.

Authorities say it happened around 11 a.m. near Markfield Drive.

CPD officials say the attacks were random and unprovoked.

"The victims were using the greenway for exercise in opposite directions when the assaults occurred," Charleston police say.

According to a report, the suspect rode his bicycle up to the first victim, punched her arm and threw an object at her.

Police say he then approached the second victim on foot and struck her in her face causing her to fall to the ground.

"A witness then yelled at the suspect and the suspect left the scene on the bicycle," police say.

Investigators describe the suspect as a black male of average build, wearing dark clothing, and was riding a green or blue bicycle.
