Charleston, SC, October 17, 2008 - The Carolina Lowcounty Chapter of the American Red Cross has experienced a 63% increase in the number of fire victims assisted as compared to the same time period in 2007. During the past three months, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter volunteers assisted 291 victims of house fires as compared to 178 during the same three months last year.
Although the assistance to families varied due to their individual needs, Red Cross assistance included hotel stays, financial assistance for food lost in the fire, referrals to replace lost clothing, and replacement of lost medicines. Volunteers also provided referrals to other local organizations in order to assist in the long-term recover needs of these families.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by the voluntary donations of people like you.
