Police, SWAT continue Bennettsville stand-off

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Police in Bennettsville are in their 20th hour at the scene of a home in Marlboro County where they say one man is holding a woman hostage.

The situation began Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. on Lawson Street off of West Main Street when authorities say a man went into a home and shot his girlfriend's sister in the leg before taking his girlfriend hostage.

Nearly 23 hours later, law enforcement officials from the SWAT team are still trying to get the man to surrender.

According to Bennettsville Police, officers were called to the home after one woman was shot and another taken hostage. Authorities say they are trying to get the suspect to let the girl go and come out safely.

WMBF News spoke to the hostage's mother, who says her two daughters were at their grandmother's home when the suspect came over. She says the suspect is her 25-year-old daughter's ex-boyfriend.

The mother told us the suspect kicked her older daughter out of the home and shot her in the leg. She says that woman is in stable condition and was taken to an area hospital.

The Bennettsville Police Department is spear-heading this situation with the help of not only SWAT members, but members of the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office and the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office.

No other information has been released by authorities at this time.
