Pools, spas must upgrade under new law

Charleston, SC (WCSC)- Officials say pool and spa suction kills one or two children every year, however, the federal government wants to get that number to zero.

On Friday, December 19th The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act goes into effect, and will require pools and spas to have specialized drain covers and pump equipment to make sure swimmers don't get trapped by a drain's powerful force.

Crews have been hard at work all over the lowcountry to make sure area pools and spas are safe and in full compliance.

"If the drains were to be covered by a human, the system would automatically break the suction on the drain and not hold the person down on the bottom of the pool," said Richard Kintner of Aqua Blue Pools.

The law is named for the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker, Graeme Baker, who died in spa after the powerful suction of the drain trapped her under water.
