Five Charleston schools on chopping block

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - School closures in Charleston county are another step closer to becoming reality with a district wide redesign.

The district says it can save between 5-6 million dollars if it closes the following schools:

Mcclellanville Middle School

Brentwood Middle School

Fraser Elementary School

Schroder Middle School and the Charlestown Academy Magnet School.

The district faces a $28 million shortfall next budget year and  staffers have searched for ways to save since June.

Others changes that may come are consolidating programs from two schools into one building, and adding or taking away certain grades from Charlestowne Progressive, Jane Edwards, and Baptist Hill.

After months of gathering public feedback and finding ways to save the district was able to cut back on the originallay proposed 12 schools up for closure down to 5.

The school board will hear the recommendations on Monday and their vote will go into effect for next school year.
