SPARTANBURG, SC (WCSC/The Citadel Athletics) - The Citadel kick returner Rod Johnson was named the Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in an announcement from the league office Monday afternoon.

He is the first Bulldog to take home the conference special teams honor since Cody Clark was honored Oct. 17, 2016.

Johnson was honored after returning a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the final minute to give the Bulldogs a 38-31 road victory over Mercer. The kick return, which ties for the third longest in school history, was the first for a Bulldog since Scooter Johnson took a kickoff back for a touchdown against VMI on Nov. 16, 2002.

The touchdown was the second of the quarter for Johnson as his five-yard run with 4:47 left in the game gave the Bulldogs a 31-24 lead.

Johnson finished the day with 135 all-purpose yards. Along with averaging 38.7 yards on three kickoff returns, he also rushed six times for 19 yards and a score.
