Swimmer drowns near Pawleys Island pier

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson says the swimmer recovered in Pawleys Island Tuesday evening has died.

Johnson says 28-year-old Carlos Ramirez was boogie boarding when the water got a hold of him.

Ramirez was visiting from Marietta, Georgia, according to Johnson. He was staying in Myrtle Beach, but he made his way down to Pawleys Island while on vacation.

Ramirez died at Waccamaw Hospital at 6:53 p.m. The cause of death was drowning.

The Pawleys Island Police Department initially found the swimmer who went missing Tuesday afternoon near the pier.
