BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTOC) - A Beaufort business owner has been arrested on multiple sexual assault charges.
Kenneth Reed, 47, was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 27 on five charges, including three counts of assault and battery in the second degree and two counts of criminal sexual conduct third degree. A bond has not been set at this time.
Reed is the owner of Maggie’s Pub in Beaufort.
On July 20, 2018, a woman reported to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office that her employer, Reed, had physically assaulted her at his residence.
“Within a week or two, four more women came forward, all of which were employee/employer relationships with Kenneth Reed,” said Captain Bob Bromage, Spokesperson, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
The women reported that these incidents occurred over a period of a year from May 2017 through May 2018 at Maggie’s Pub as well as another business in Beaufort where Reed is an employee.
“You have five consistent stories with five women about this behavior. Moving in that direction. it’s credible,” Capt. Bromage said.
Reed remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center. We knocked on the door of his home Thursday, but his wife did not answer. We also paid a visit to Maggie’s Pub and Eatery, where several of the remaining witnesses claimed they were sexually assaulted. The restaurant is currently shut down.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says they take all allegations seriously, especially those of this nature.
“We know sexual assaults are under-reported in the United States, as is domestic violence. We encourage victims to come forward, and although it’s difficult to go through the process, bringing these people to justice is important,” Bromage said.
BCSO says this investigation is ongoing. They’re not sure if there are more victims.
