RIDGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at Lieber Correctional on Monday.
Derrick Furtick, 31, died at approximately 9 p.m. Monday, according to state Department of Corrections officials.
Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers said Furtick’s body was sent to Newberry Pathology for an autopsy.
His inmate record at Lieber indicates he was serving a 30-year sentence for kidnapping. He was transferred to Lieber in August 2017 from Kirkland Correctional Institution, records state.
A cause of death has not yet been released by the Department of Corrections.
The corrections department, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the coroner’s office are investigating.
