Officials investigating after body found in water at Finlay Park
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia police are investigating after an unresponsive adult male was found in a body of water at Finlay Park.
CPD officials said the body was found by a passerby at the park who called 911 Friday afternoon.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office, Columbia Fire, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Columbia Police were all on scene for about an hour and a half.
Columbia police tells WIS it looked like the body was in the water for “quite some time,” however they are waiting on an autopsy report.
WIS did speak with a few witnesses who saw the body.
Kapaunda Bannister says she and her friend Henry Harris were at the park when someone approached them asking for a “second pair of eyes to see if there was a body in the pond.”
“All we know was that it was a black male, he had a hoodie on his head because you could see the top part of his hair, you could see the mustache and beard and that’s it,” Bannister said. “I don’t know how I feel. I guess I was numb because I never saw nothing like that before.”
The person’s identity has not been released.
“You almost couldn’t really tell because he was in that water so long the face had froze,” Harris said. “I’m pretty sure he’s been in there for three or four days, it wasn’t something that just happened last night.”
The Richland County Coroner says an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
Columbia Police are investigating this as a suspicious death, and are working to determine if the death was in criminal nature or not.
