WEST VALLEY CITY, UT (KSTU/CNN) - Police responded to a 911 call made by a 5-year-old boy but were unable to save his mother from multiple stab wounds.
Officials say the 5-year-old son of 46-year-old Belinda Thomas called 911 Saturday evening from a Utah trailer home and told the dispatcher his mother had been hurt.
When police arrived, they found the door to the trailer open and Thomas inside suffering from multiple stab wounds. They attempted to revive her but were unable to do so.
After investigation, police identified 50-year-old Darren Byrd as a suspect in the case. He had fled the scene, but police located the vehicle he was reported to be driving and took him into custody.
Byrd faces charges of aggravated murder, child abuse and domestic violence in the presence of a child, among other related counts.
A relationship between Thomas and Byrd hasn’t been established, but both of them lived in the trailer, according to police.
Thomas’ son is now in the custody of the state’s Division of Child and Family Services.
