Charleston County School District announces plans to shut down Garrett Academy
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County School District scheduled a meeting Tuesday afternoon at Garrett Academy of Technology where it is informing parents of plans to close the school.
The district also sent letters to parents explaining the decision.
The letter states the school will close in June 2020, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
The school will close ahead of the opening in fall 2020 of a new state-of-the-art career and technical education school in North Charleston, the letter states.
“The North Charleston CAS (yet to be named) will expand the opportunities for students to graduate career-ready in many high-demand and high-wage jobs or extend their studies to college in those fields,” the letter states. “The CAS will be located near North Charleston High School. Students from throughout Constituent District 4 will be eligible to attend.”
The letter acknowledges the bond and loyalty many families have to Garrett Academy, but encourages students and parents in North Charleston to explore the opportunities students will have at the new school.
