CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - If you're on the hunt for a new home to rent you need to be careful. Rental scams are still out there.
When Michele Creech started looking for a new rental to be closer to family, she was already on high alert. Her niece found some possible rental homes online but Michelle thought deals sounded too good to be true.
“It was a $1,000 with no pet fees and I thought OK,” Creech said.
Creech and her niece also noticed the properties were showing up on different rental sites with drastically different prices. She found a four-bedroom house on Education Dr. in Summerville listed for $1,000 on Craigslist. The same house showed up on American Homes 4 Rent® for $1,895. She also found a five-bedroom house listed for $1,200 on Craigslist that actually rents for $2,250.
“It’s a scam,” Creech said. “A five-bedroom house for $1,000 in the economy here in this area? No way.”
Michele alerted the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and DCSO put out new warning on Facebook.
Make sure to research a property before handing over any money. Once you know a listing is a scam, it’s also important to report the listing so others don’t become a victim.
