Man accused of throwing Molotov cocktail-type device into ex-girlfriend’s apartment

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A Charleston man is accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail type device into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment early Monday morning.

Charleston police arrested Devin Spinelli outside the woman’s Chapel Street apartment building. Jail records show Spinelli is facing multiple charges including possession of a destructive device and arson second degree.

According to court affidavits, the victim had just broken up with Spinelli, telling him she needed space.

The woman told officers she heard an object thrown at her living room window and saw flames. She had called police a few hours prior for rocks being thrown through the same window.

Court documents state officers smelled an odor similar to gasoline outside the victim’s window and could see burn marks on and below the window.

Officers found Spinelli in his car outside the apartment building. According to the affidavits, Spinelli was wearing a pair of latex gloves.

Officers found more latex gloves inside the vehicle and a clear water bottle containing a gold liquid substance.

A lighter was also found near the gear shift, documents state.

A magistrate set his bond at $250,000 Monday afternoon.
