DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - According to a lawsuit filed last week by a Dorchester County District Four parent, a teacher in the district failed to notify both the school and the child’s parents about a fight after it happened.
The suit states that the child was enrolled at Harleyville Ridgeville Middle School when she was in math class on March 10 and another child screamed at her and hit her twice on the side of the head.
According to the suit, video in the classroom taken shortly before the fight shows a teacher walking by the students who were allegedly using, “loud voices, profanity, falling out of desks, and using their cell phones to video the classroom environment.”
The teacher also didn’t take any action to intervene or stop the student from hitting the girl in the head, the suit states. The teacher then failed to report the fight to the school or the child’s family, according to the lawsuit.
The suit also states that the girl kept the fight to herself because she was embarrassed and the family only found out after seeing the video after it had gone “viral.”
The parent is seeking actual damages and any other relief a court may deem proper during a jury trial.
