Berkeley County, SC (WCSC) - Teachers across the country are using the Donors Choose website that allows the public to fund extra learning materials and tools for their students.

The students in Geoff Sklar’s class at Cane Bay High School build robots for competition.

But to keep the bots in top shape and to build new ones, the team needs some special tools to operate a Computer Numerical Control or CNC machine.

“Basically cuts out the metal. [It] cuts out different shapes and does different cuts for us," Sklar said."We have to be exact when we use the robot, when we make our robots."

The experience the students get when they build the robots prepares them to go on to college to study engineering or qualifies them for a job in manufacturing right out of high school.

“Have a little bit of experience and confidence so when they go to work like Boeing, Bosch, or all these great businesses they can be ready to go, have a step up on their competition you might say,” Sklar said.

The tools Sklar is requesting are similar to bits you’d buy for a drill, but they’re pricey.

His project on the Donors Choose website needs $632, and so far no one has donated. He only has until this Friday, April 26 to get the money.
