BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials have identified a man who was killed in a shooting at a home in Sangaree.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office says 22-year-old Joseph Melton died on Tuesday. Coroner George M. Oliver released a report on Wednesday afternoon stating Melton was shot in the head at close range.
“An autopsy was completed today and the death has been ruled a homicide,” Oliver said.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17-year-old Timothy Mark Easterling Jr. and charged him for murder, obstructing justice and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
He’s expected to be in bond court Wednesday night.
The investigation began on Tuesday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. when Berkeley County dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a shooting. According to BCSO officials, the call was initially dispatched as a suicide.
When deputies got to the scene on the 100 block of Brown Court they were met by the complaint, identified as Easterling. Investigators say Easterling told deputies his friend was inside of his room with a gunshot wound.
Deputies entered the home and found the 22-year-old victim lying on the floor suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his head.
The victim was transported by EMS to an area hospital where he later died.
“The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” BCSO officials said.
