N. Charleston police determining if spike in trailer thefts are related

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police are trying to determine if some recent thefts of trailers are related.

Police say several businesses have been targeted in March and April.

Last Wednesday morning, a thief broke into Palmetto Residential Electric on Industry Drive and stole an excavator and the trailer it was sitting on.

The crime was caught on surveillance cameras.

“He actually tried to jump over the fence and he cut the chain and tried to push it open. So he got back in his truck and rammed through the gate,” said Marlon Reolegio, a manager of the business.

Police say other businesses have experienced similar break ins and thefts. Extra Space Storage on Rivers Avenue was broken into on March 10. According to investigators, a trailer was stolen.

Surveillance video shows a man inside the business driving a rental truck.

Investigators say he is a person of interest.

At Palmetto Residential Electric, the chain that was broken off from the gate and pieces from the suspect’s truck are still at the crime scene.

“It’s awful, it’s awful,” Reolegio said. “We’re just trying to make a living, working hard, doing the bump and grind daily. And to have this happen, it sets us back.”

Police say the trailer and excavator have a combined value of $25,000.

“We had the trailer and excavator for about two weeks and for this to happen, it’s just awful you know,” Reolegio said.

Reolegio is hoping someone will recognize the truck in the video and call police.

“I hope we catch this guy, I’m hoping all these other businesses are on the lookout for guys like this,” he said.
