CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - In a 25-mile radius of zip code 29401, which is in downtown Charleston, there are about 15 nursing homes, according to public records kept and published by Medicare.

Of those 15 nursing homes, a few of them have more health citations than the state's average--some of them, more than double that average.

Those nursing homes include Heartland Health and Rehabilitation Care Center in Hanahan, Harvest Health and Rehab of Johns Island, and Hallmark Healthcare Center.

Medicare rates both Heartland in Hanahan and Harvest Health and Rehab as "much below average" based on health inspections.

Under that same category, Hallmark Healthcare Center is rated as "below average."

The state average for health citations at nursing homes is 7.4, according to Medicare.

But these facilities have at least double that number.

Hallmark has 16 citations, Harvest Heath and Rehab totals 28 citations, and Medicare's website lists 32 citations for Heartland.

All of those facilities were last inspected back in 2018.

Heartland Health and Rehab did not respond to a request for comment.

Neither Harvest Health and Rehab nor Hallmark Healthcare Center had contact information available online, including a website, email or phone number.
