Folly Beach may put restrictions on digging holes in the sand

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - The City of Folly Beach is considering an ordinance that would place restrictions on the holes people dig on the beach.

The proposed ordinance, which passed the first reading Tuesday night, would make it illegal to dig a hole deeper than 12 inches.

Regardless of how large the hole is, the proposal would require people to fill any hole they dig 30 minutes before sunset.

Another portion of the new rule states all shovels, excluding shovels designed for children to use, would be banned from the beach.

Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin said the ordinance is designed to keep people and animals safer.

Goodwin said in the past, people have fallen in or tripped on holes that are on the beach.

He also said the holes can create problems for turtles, who can sometimes fall inside and struggle to get out without assistance.

Tuesday night’s reading was the first of two before the ordinance can become law.
