‘We are as happy as ever for him to be a Niner:’ Victim of UNC Charlotte shooting takes first steps after several days in the hospital
UNC Charlotte shooting victim Drew Pescaro took his first steps Monday after almost two weeks in the hospital.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WMBF) – One of the students injured in last month’s shooting at UNC Charlotte took his first steps on Monday following 13 days in the hospital.

A short video posted to Drew Pescaro’s Twitter page shows him walking down the hallway of a hospital, with one hand clutching his IV and the other the hand of a nurse.

“Took my first steps without a walker today so I felt the need to share it with everyone,” Pescaro wrote, along with a smiling face emoji and the hashtages #CharlotteStrong #DrewStrong.

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip Dubois also provided a Monday update on Pescaro’s progress.

In a statement on the school’s website, Dubois shared news that was passed along to him by Pescaro’s girlfriend, which said: “We still have a little time left here in the hospital, but Drew is feeling strong, and as you can see, he is happy as ever to be a Niner!”

The update included a photo of a smiling Pescaro laying in his hospital bed.

“We are as happy as ever for him to be a Niner, too,” Dubois wrote.

Pescaro was one of six students shot during the April 30 shooting on UNCC’s campus. Two of them – Riley Howell and Ellis Reed Parlier – died from their injuries.

The other three injured in the shooting were 20-year-old Rami Alramadhan of Saudi Arabia, 20-year-old Sean Dehart of Apex, NC, and 23-year-old Emily Houpt of Charlotte.

Trystan Terrell, 22, is facing murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting.
