Berkeley County School District considering pay raise for teachers, employees
BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Berkeley County School District is considering raising pay for all teachers and district employees by 4 percent in the 2019-2020 school year.
The proposed salary increases would cost an additional $6,845,184 for teacher pay and $3,046,753 for all other employees.
The suggestion for increased pay comes from the district’s proposed 2019-2020 budget.
That budget also includes a suggestion for hiring an additional 31 bookkeepers--one for every elementary and middle school with more than 500 students.
The extra bookkeepers would cost about $1,575,405.
“This was a school level budget request,” BCSD spokesperson Katie Tanner said in reference to the additional bookkeepers. “In many schools, bookkeepers have dual roles. They serve as bookkeepers and head secretaries. We have heard from our schools that this is needed and would help improve overall operations and prepare for increasing school population growth.”
The budget is scheduled to be discussed on Tuesday at about 7:15 p.m.
