NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - North Charleston Police arrested a 59-year-old Summerville man in connection with an incident involving a 14-year-old girl.
Lawrence Lipe is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 16 years of age, according to jail records.
The teen told police she had a heated argument with her mother on the afternoon of May 2 and left the home, an incident report states. While she walked down the street, a man in a red Ford pickup truck drove up next to her and asked if she was OK and if she needed a ride, the victim said.
The teen told police the man seemed “old and nice” and she was not concerned for her safety, so she got into the back seat of the vehicle. They drove to a nearby gas station where Lipe purchased snacks and then asked if she wanted to go back home, to which she replied no, the incident report states.
Lipe then allegedly asked if she wanted to get a hotel room and the teen who said she still did not fear for her safety, agreed, the report states.
The victim told investigators that once inside the hotel room, Lipe began to ask “uncomfortable questions” including when her birthday was, whether she was a virgin and whether she had “ever dated an older man,” the report states.
She told police he then grabbed her hands and started kissing them and would not let go of her hands when she told him to stop and attempted to pull away. She said he kissed up her arms and tried to kiss her cheek but she pulled away. He then got on top of her and began kissing her on top of her clothes, the report states.
The victim was able to get away and ran to the hotel’s front desk, asked to use the phone and called her mother to tell her what was happening, the report states. Her mother told her daughter to call 911 and while the victim was talking to dispatchers, Lipe walked up to her and tried to comfort her, the report states.
The teen told police he tried to give her $20 and left when she refused to take it, the report states.
The desk clerk told police he was not on duty when they checked in, but was working when he saw the teen run up to the desk crying and said “it seemed odd when Lipe walked up to her and tried to console her and give her money," the report states.
Police were working to obtain surveillance footage of the incident and the report states they identified Lipe based on identifying information provided by the hotel employee.
Jail records show bond was set at $25,000. Lipe was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
