CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Crews secured a gas line damaged Thursday afternoon that closed a West Ashley intersection.

Dominion Energy spokesman Paul Fischer said the damaged line, which forced the intersection of Savage Road at Tobias Gadson Boulevard to be blocked off, was secured at approximately 1:30 p.m..

The damage was caused by a third-party contractor digging in the area.

“The majority of natural gas leaks are caused by third party damage to our infrastructure,” Fischer said in a statement. “That’s why we encourage everyone, be it an individual or contractor, to call 811 to have all underground utilities marked before doing any digging work.”

The Charleston Fire Department responded to the scene and Charleston County deputies assisted with traffic while the intersection was blocked.
