CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A hospital surprised a Charleston couple Friday with an infant-sized cap and gown for their premature baby who was able to go home after spending 31 days inside its neonatal intensive care unit.

Trident Medical officials say the baby, Aubrey Smith, was born at only 30 weeks and weighed less than three pounds.

After spending a month in the hospital’s nursery, parents Emily and Brett were able to bring Aubrey home after a full graduation ceremony at the hospital.

Emily Smith encouraged other parents whose children are born premature to visit their babies daily while her husband stressed the importance of husbands supporting their wives through the difficult time.

Trident Medical Center’s Nursery team has cared for 203 premature babies in 2018 and have already seen 82 premature babies in 2019.
