CLEMSON, S.C. (WCSC) - Five members of the defending national champion Clemson Tigers were named to preseason watch lists by the Maxwell group on Monday afternoon headlined by quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence was one of three offensive players named to the Maxwell Award watch list which goes to the best player in the nation. The sophomore signal caller is coming off a season that saw him throw for over 3200 yards and 30 touchdowns after taking over as the starter early in the season.

Running back Travis Etienne is also on the list after rushing for over 1600 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2018.

Sophomore wide receiver Justyn Ross also made the cut after catching 46 passes for 1000 yards and 9 touchdowns.

On defense, the Tigers had 2 players on the watch list for the Bednarik Award going to the best defensive player in the country. Led by linebacker Isaiah Simmons who led the team in tackles last season with 97. He also added 9.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.

Despite not starting a game last year, defensive lineman Xavier Thomas also making the cut. Thomas made the most of his time on the field in 2018 collecting 3.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss.

The Tigers will be in Charlotte on Wednesday for ACC Media Day. Head coach Dabo Swinney and Ft. Dorchester alum John Simpson will represent Clemson.
