NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A new park-and-ride opened Wednesday in North Charleston on Rivers Avenue near Melnick Drive next to the Texas Roadhouse location.

The lot will serve CARTA, TriCounty Link and vanpool services. It has 289 parking spaces and also includes a shelter, bathrooms and bike racks. Officials say it will be monitored by cameras at all times.

“This is the region’s first true, permanent park-and-ride facility, and it’s another step forward for transit and alternative modes of transportation,” CARTA board chairman Mike Seekings said in a statement. “It’s going to be safe, clean and offer amenities that will please our longtime riders and hopefully attract many new ones.”

The new lot is the first dedicated lot owned by Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments and CARTA.

The lot will be served by CARTA routes Express 1 and routes 10 and 12. TriCounty Link routes will include Commuter Solutions 1 and 2, and B102.

CARTA Express and Tricounty Link bus stops will be located at shelters in the parking lot. To assist with efficiency, routes 10 and 12 will stop near the entrance of the parking lot at Antler and Melnick drives.

CARTA routes 10 and 12 will begin servicing the station July 22.
