U.S. Marshals arrest S.C. night club murder suspect 700 miles away in Florida

LANCASTER, S.C. (WBTV) - A second murder suspect wanted after two people were killed and 10 others were shot at a night club in Lancaster, S.C. has been arrested.

Last week, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office announced 30-year-old Antonia Champion of Fort Mill was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime in the shooting deaths of two men at the club.

On Monday morning, Deputies said the second man wanted for murder, 31-year-old Breante Stevens, was tracked down and arrested by U.S. Marshals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida - 700 miles away from the Ole Skool Sports Bar & Grill in the Twin Pines area of Lancaster, S.C. where the shooting took place. He had been on the run for nine days, according to deputies.

“We are pleased Stevens is in custody and look forward to having him back in Lancaster County to face his charges,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “His arrest is the culmination of non-stop efforts and cooperation among multiple law enforcement agencies."

Faile praised SLED Agents, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Marshals Service for the arrest.

Stevens is being charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a pistol by a person convicted of a crime of violence.

The two victims killed in the shooting were identified as Henry Colvin, 29, from Rock Hill, SC and Aaron Harris, 28, from Kershaw, SC. Ten other people were shot.

“We want to find out what truly happened. What caused this,” Faile said. “I’m certainly working with our solicitor and finding out exactly what they need to make sure we have a good prosecution case available for them when it comes that time. We’re going to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle are ready to present.”

Four of the ten people shot were airlifted to the hospital for treatment after the shooting, which happened just before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. As of the following Monday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said all were still hospitalized and two were in critical condition.

Investigators were pursuing leads on several fronts to locate and arrest Stevens, saying he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Deputies say Stevens waived extradition and was incarcerated in the Lancaster County Detention Center Thursday, Oct. 10. A deputy and an investigator left Lancaster early Wednesday morning for Broward County, Florida, and returned with Stevens, who was booked into the detention center about 7:15 p.m. Thursday. Bond was denied.

Stevens is charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Colvin and Harris. He is also charged with eight counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature for the gunshot injuries suffered by the other eight shooting victims. He is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a pistol by a person convicted of a crime of violence. Stevens will appear before a circuit court judge for a bond hearing at a later date.

“Now that Stevens is back in Lancaster County, judicial proceedings against him can begin. Our investigators are still working on this case, and additional information will be released when appropriate,” Sheriff Faile said.

As investigators searched for Stevens, they also had 30-year-old Antonia Champion on their radar.

They learned early in the investigation that Champion had a gun in Ole Skool at the time of the shootings.

He was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol, possession of a pistol by a person convicted of a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm on premises where alcohol is sold.

He posted bond on those charges, but the York County Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services had placed a hold on him for a probation violation. He is now being held at the York County Detention Center. It is unknown when he will be taken to the custody of Lancaster County authorities.

“As I have said before, our investigators and officers from the other agencies who are helping us have been relentless in their pursuit of leads and information in this case, and positive developments continue to occur. Every day we get closer to the full picture of what happened in Ole Skool last Saturday morning,” Sheriff Faile said.

Family members of the victims are still trying to pull through the tragedy of losing loved ones.

“Who would shoot my baby?” asked 29-year-old Henry Colvin’s mother, through tears, over the phone after learning the news.

Henry’s big brother, Tyrone Colvin, said they called Henry “LeeLee." They say he was hilarious and loved music.

“That was my baby brother. I pretty much raised him. I’m pretty sure if he was here and you asked who he wanted to be like when he grew up, he would probably say me," said Tyrone Colvin.

The Colvin family was together trying to process the news of LeeLee’s untimely death.

“This was a violent incident of huge magnitude that was witnessed by lots of people,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “Two people are dead, and many more are seriously injured. The shooter or shooters are out there."

Deputies say shots were fired inside and outside the club.

"We need to talk with everybody who was at the club when the shooting happened, and I encourage those witnesses to contact us immediately so those responsible for these deaths and injuries can be taken into custody,” said Faile.

“This event is very tragic and will affect all involved, for years to come," said Lancaster deputy Karla Deese. "The sheer magnitude of injury is like none I have seen in my 14 years with the Coroner’s Office.”

Deputies say more charges are expected.
