DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Coroner has identified the driver of an 18-wheeler who was killed on Monday in a crash with a train on Hwy. 78 Monday.

John David Wallace, 51, of Columbia, was pronounced dead at 1:22 p.m. at Trident Regional Medical Center, according to coroner Paul Brouthers.

Wallace died when a train crashed into his vehicle as he tried to cross railroad tracks, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at approximately 12:35 p.m. on Mellichamp Road near the intersection of Highway 78 in Dorchester County, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern Said.

Southern said Wallace was driving a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer flatbed. He was killed after his vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a Norfolk Southern train.

The truck is a Meridian Brick truck, a brick manufacturer in Dorchester County. The business is located near the train tracks.

Highway 78 was closed in both directions as crews investigated the crash. The roadway reopened as of approximately 2 p.m., Southern said.

Meridian Brick has not yet responded to a request for comment on the accident.
