BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Emergency crews responded to a crash involving a train and tractor trailer in Berkeley County Monday evening.
Berkeley County government officials say the incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Byrnes Drive and Elm Street just off Highway 52 in St. Stephen.
A report states that the crash resulted in a 40-gallon diesel spill that has since been contained.
According to county officials, two patients were transported to Trident with non-life threatening injuries.
Video captured by Hunter Humbert shows the tractor trailer stuck on the tracks and the train crashing through it.
John Waters Jr. also captured video of the other side of the tracks showing the damage done to the rear of the tractor trailer.
Our photojournalist on the scene reported that Highway 51 was back open late Monday night, but Elm Street was still closed.
“We are continuing to work the scene,” Berkeley County officials said earlier on Monday."There is currently no public threat from this incident. We ask the public to be patient and to avoid the area."
County officials said they expected the clean up to take several hours.
Crews with the Berkeley County Emergency Management Department along with first responders and Hepaco Inc. responded to the scene.
