HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - The Hilton Head Airport isn’t exactly a travel hub compared to nearby airports like Savannah-Hilton Head International or Charleston International.
"We are a niche destination airport here on the island,” Jon Rembold, director of Beaufort Airports, said.
A niche destination that is expanding its reach.
"It'll increase a lot. I mean, last year we thought we were pretty busy,” Rembold said.
The airport is adding several flights starting in March.
American Airlines will be expanding into the Midwest, Delta will be adding more Atlanta flights, and United will be adding Newark weekend flights
The increase will likely bring more foot traffic to the terminal during the summer.
Once every airline adds flight options, wait times may get longer. But Hilton Head still says their location makes up for it.
"If you want to come on vacation, if you want to come see relatives, you can land here and be at your final destination within minutes,” Rembold said.
For flyers like Juan Cortez, the additions add variety.
"She lives in Bluffton, so I think a drive 20 minutes is better than an hour to Savannah,” Cortez said. "But normally I go to Savannah because there's not as much options."
He's excited the new flights will be cost effective and convenient.
"I’m excited for the new options that they have,” Cortez said.
