Coroner identifies teen struck, killed by Amtrak train in Hanahan

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCSC) - Authorities are investigating a fatal crash involving an Amtrak train in Hanahan that killed a teenage pedestrian.

Hanahan police confirmed a female victim died in the accident in the area of Hanahan Road and Railroad Avenue. Berkeley County coroner identified her as 17-year-old Bethany Ridenour.

Amtrak officials said the train was coming from Savannah and heading to New York at the time of the incident.

According to Amtrak officials, the train came into contact with a person who was on the track, and service was suspended following the incident. Service then resumed at 2:44 p.m.

“There are no reported injuries to customers or crew members," Amtrak officials said."The investigation of the incident is underway. The train originated in Savannah."

Police say the accident happened around 10 a.m. and took more than four hours for train tracks to clear following the crash.

Officers closed off a portion of Hanahan Road so they could investigate.

A police spokeswoman said the National Transportation Safety Board and railroad police are leading the investigation.
