Publix, Winn-Dixie to begin installing plexiglass in all stores to protect staff during coronavirus pandemic

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Two major grocery chains are taking action to keep staff and customers safe during the coronavirus pandemic by installing plexiglass in areas of their store with direct customer interaction.

Publix and Winn-Dixie says plexiglass will be installed at cash registers, customer service desks and pharmacies in all of their stores. Publix says the installation starts this weekend and it expects every store to have plexiglass installed within the next two weeks. Winn-Dixie says installation has already begun and should be completed by April 3.

Publix announced the move after saying Monday that an associate working at a store in Cumming, Georgia tested positive for coronavirus. The store underwent a deep clean and the Georgia Department of Health determined that customers were considered low risk of exposure and products sold do not pose any risk to customers.

Publix says it’s currently reduced store hours from 8am until 8pm company-wide to undergo a heightened disinfection program focused, in part, on high-touch areas and to give staff time to restock shelves. The store has designated a senior shopping hour from 7am until 8am on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Winn-Dixie is also instituting a two-cart-length distance between customers at check out. The grocery chain allows seniors and other high-risk customers to shop during a special hour between 8-9am, Monday through Friday. Pharmacies will be open at 8am on weekdays to fill prescriptions. Winn-Dixie says there stores are closing at 8pm to allow associates to clean and to stock shelves.
