HANAHAN, S.C. (WCSC) - A man has been arrested following an investigation of the death of a person found early Friday morning inside a Hanahan home.

Matthew Speck has been arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and ill-treatment of animals.

Police Chief Dennis Turner said officers responded at approximately 6 a.m. to the 1300 block of Raptor Drive where one person was found dead.

Turner said the investigation is active and still in its early stages.

He did not provide details about the victim, saying the Berkeley County Coroner would release the person’s identity.

People in the area say they almost never see this type of crime in the area.

“It’s a little unsettling. But you know, we’re pretty thick-skinned," Robert Farrell, a neighbor, said. "We lived in DC and a few other areas like that. It’s a little shocking that it’s a couple doors down.”

Hanahan and North Charleston officers have responded, along with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and Berkeley County EMS.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Hanahan Police at 843-747-5711 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
