Police looking for information following fatal accident in West Ashley

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Investigators with the Charleston Police Department are asking anyone with information on a fatal accident in West Ashley to come forward.

The coroner identified the deceased as 34-year-old William Skidmore of Charleston.

On Wednesday at 3:09 a.m., authorities responded to a single vehicle accident on US 17 North near McLeod Road.

According to police, the driver of a Dodge Challenger was traveling North on US 17 when the vehicle left the roadway, causing it to overturn and come to rest in front of 2865 Savannah Highway.

“The adult male driver was pronounced deceased on scene,” CPD officials said.

The northbound lanes of US 17 were closed for several hours while investigators remained on scene collecting evidence.

“The investigation into this collision is on-going; and any persons with information or witnesses to the collision are asked to call Consolidated Dispatch at 843-743-7200,” CPD officials said. “The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased.”

This is the 6th fatal collision investigated by the Charleston Police Department this year.

“While the cause of this collision is still under investigation, the Charleston Police Department advises all roadway users including motor vehicle operators, pedestrians, and cyclists to utilize safe practices on roadways,” Charleston police officials said. “Please pay attention to your surroundings and obey all traffic laws, signs and signals. Please do not drive impaired and utilize a ride sharing program or a sober driver to arrive alive.”
