WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCSC) - Contractors say a section of a road in West Ashley will be closed until mid-January.
Mike Blackburn, an AT&T contractor, says a section of Playground Road from Ashley River Road to Falkirk Drive will be closed starting Monday.
That’s located right next to St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground in West Ashley.
Blackburn says the road will remain closed until January 15 with the exception of the upcoming holidays. The road is scheduled to open back up for the Thanksgiving weekend, November 25 through November 30, and Christmas week, December 23 through January 3.
The road will be closed to move some utilities so drainage work can be done. The utilities must be move so staff with the City of Charleston can work on a major drainage project.
The Forest Acres Drainage Project has been in the work for a few years with the goal to reduce flooding in the area. Phase 2 of the project includes improvements to the canal system upstream of the bikeway, across Playground Road and up to almost Ashley River Road.
After AT&T completes the work and reopens the road, crews will need to make connections from their old infrastructure into their new infrastructure until near the end of 2021 so that the City of Charleston crews can install its new box culverts. City staff expect their work to begin as soon as AT&T is done in 2021 and continue through 2022.
