CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Gamecocks defensive back Israel Mukuamu announced on social media on Tuesday morning that he’ll be leaving the team immediately to begin preparations for the 2021 NFL Draft.
“With great humility, gratitude and excitement, I’m announcing that I will forego the rest of the season to PREPARE FOR THE 2021 NFL DRAFT.” Mukuamu said in the post. As I go forward, I take the entire Gamecock Family and community with me and will strive to make you proud.
Mukuamu becomes the 2nd Gamecock to declare for the draft in the last 2 days as fellow cornerback Jaycee Horn did the same on Monday night.
Both moves come on the heels of South Carolina firing head coach Will Muschamp on Sunday.
Interim head coach Mike Bobo announced on Tuesday that, in addition to Horn and Mukuamu, the team will be without defensive back and Cane Bay alum RJ Roderick and freshman defensive lineman Makius Scott for the rest of the season as both have chosen to opt for the remainder of the season.
Mukuamu, who started his high school career at Berkeley before relocating to Louisiana, ends his final season in Columbia with 10 tackles and 2 interceptions.
For his career, he’ll finish with 76 tackles and 7 interceptions.
