NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Instead of packing families inside for a holiday barbecue and toy giveaway, Tricounty Family Ministries had to get creative to offer support for Christmas in 2020.

Volunteers greeted cars for three hours Monday at the ministry center in North Charleston to kick off “The Four Days of Christmas.” Families were able to pull up their cars and get some meals to go, groceries for meals to cook at home, a turkey for Christmas dinner, and some gently used coats.

Like everything in 2020, Tricounty Family Ministries Executive Director Kara Stewart says the organization had to adapt its holiday plans because of the pandemic.

“We normally serve between 1,800 to 2,000 people inside our dining room with a great barbecue lunch and then have the toys in the toy room for the kids to pick out and coats for people to try on, but because of the pandemic we’re holding our event outdoors this year,” Stewart said. “People have pre-registered to receive the same great meal from Martin’s Barbecue joint, funded by Feed the Need.”

Stewart says the organization hopes to serve about 3,000 people during the holiday event. She says 120 volunteers signed up to help and went through training.

The organization will continue its holiday giveaway on Wednesday, Dec. 16, Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day.

Anyone interested in receiving help needs to register in person first. Registration is open through Thursday, Dec. 17 at the Tricounty Family Ministries center located at 2105 Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston.
